WinStar Farm, a globally known Kentucky Thoroughbred operation, started out as the dream of Kenny Troutt and Bill Casner, both of whom have a “rags to riches” story. They formed a partnership that began with a small claiming stable and after Kenny failed with two different business ventures, he asked Bill to partner with him in his new business: Excel Communications. Founded in 1988, Excel Communications was a multi-level marketer that sold telecommunications products. In 1998 Excel was sold to Teleglobe, leaving the financial opportunity for Kenny and Bill to re-enter horse racing. In 2000, they purchased Prestonwood Farm, a 450 acre farm in Versailles, Kentucky. The farm came with three stallions: Kris S., Groovy and a young stallion named Distorted Humor. They established WinStar Farm, and added Tiznow to their stallion roster. WinStar bred Funny Cide, who went on to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, from the first foal crop of Distorted Humor.
After only 16 years, WinStar grew to a twenty-two stallion roster, with 200 broodmares, keeps approximately 100 horses in their world class training and rehab center, preps around 100 yearlings, campaigns about 50 racehorses and expands across 2,400 acres of pristine bluegrass. WinStar has bred over 80 stakes winners and 17 Grade 1 winners. WinStar has had a contender in the Kentucky Derby 16 times since 2006 and won the Kentucky Derby in 2010 with homebred Super Saver. WinStar also campaigned dual classic winner Drosselmeyer, who won the 2010 Belmont stakes and 2011 Breeders’ Cup Classic and Well Armed, winner of the 2009 Dubai World Cup. WinStar is dedicated to the dream, and continues to be a powerful force in Thoroughbred racing.
